Carano, who played Angel Dust in Deadpool, was set to play a female version of the Punisher in a sequel to Adi Shankar’s 2012 short film Punisher: Dirty Laundry.
Shankar tells Inverse that the Punisher: Dirty Laundry sequel was “going to be a two-hander that introduced the ‘Lady Punisher’ who was going to be played by MMA fighter and Deadpool actor Gina Carano.”
Thomas Jane, who starred in Marvel’s official Punisher movie and reprised the role for the bootleg Dirty Laundry short, would also have appeared in the sequel.
Shankar was in pre-production on the film, which was being written by Academy Award-nominee Wayne Kramer, but the project was shelved. However, Shankar is still hopeful that he may be able to take it back off the shelf in the future.
Frank Castle did have a female partner for a time. Rachel Cole-Alves debuted in Greg Rucka and Mike Checchetto’s 2011 The Punisher series. She was a Marine who’s wedding reception was crashed by members of the Marvel universe underworld. The attack left her in critical condition. When she finally recovered, she crossed paths with Castle and the two began working together.
