Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earned $8.8 million at the box office on its third Friday. Based on that number, analysts believed Alien: Covenant would easily outpace Guardians, but the latest Marvel movie rallied on Saturday and is now estimated to have a $35 million box office weekend, just $1 million short of Alien: Covenant‘s estimated $36 million opening weekend.

The total also lunges Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 past the $300 million mark at the domestic box office. That also puts it withing striking distance of the original Guardians of the Galaxy‘s $3.33 million lifetime total in less than a month since opening.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened to $145 million domestically. The film has already crossed $500 million at the worldwide box office, pushing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s lifetime box office total over the $11 billion mark.
