Hugh Jackman Wanted To Wear Wolverine’s Costume On Screen

While fans have mostly loved Hugh Jackman‘s time playing Wolverine in the X-Men movies franchise (X-Men Origins: Wolverine aside), one thing that remains a nagging disappointment is that Jackman never wore Wolverine‘s class blue-and-yellow costume, or any of his costumes, from the Marvel Comics universe.

It turns out that wasn’t for lack of trying. Jackman says that he wanted to wear the yellow spandex, but it just never seemed to work out for the good of the movie.

“There were a couple of things I couldn’t work out how to do. Fans always say, ‘When are we gonna see you in the blue-and-yellow spandex? We’ve gotta see that shot!’” Jackman told Collider. “We tried a little bit in The Wolverine, it didn’t happen — on that plane at the end he opens up a box and there’s the suit, I think that ended up getting cut. So the suit was one thing but we just couldn’t work out how to do it, so if anyone can work that out, you go for it.”

The scene he’s referring to was ultimately cut from The Wolverine, but the costume isn’t the only part of Wolverine’s mythos that he couldn’t quite fit into the movies.

“The other idea that I always loved was the idea in the comics that every year on Logan‘s birthday, his brother comes and beats the crap out of him,” Jackman says. “I just thought that was such a cool very fun idea and very in keeping to those characters. His birthday present was just a beating and that’s the only time he sees him. I kept saying, ‘Jim can we put that in?’ and he goes, ‘Eh, this is not that movie.’ But anyway.”

Jackman seems to be referring to an origin story that was once considered for Sabretooth, where he would have been Logan‘s father who showed up once a year on Logan‘s birthday to put his runt of a son in his place.

Logan is the final performance as Wolverine for Hugh Jackman. Jackman has played Wolverine for 17 years and through nine movies: the original X-Men trilogy, the prequel X-Men trilogy (though two of those appearances were cameos), and the Wolverine trilogy.

Logan also introduces a possible heir to Wolverine’s mantle in Laura, a.k.a. X-23, a clone young female clone of Wolverine with his claws, healing factor and fierce fighting skills.

Logan is directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Frank and Michael Green, from a story by Mangold, and also stars Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant and Dafne Keen.
