Fox announced a brand Blu-Ray steel book special edition of Hugh Jackman‘s final performance as the Wolverine, hitting Best Buy this month on May 23. The company went all out for the film, commissioning original Old Man Logan artist Steve McNiven to design the cover and inside jacket of the steel book with his definitive style.

McNiven collaborated with Mark Millar on the Old Man Logan comic book that capped off the writer’s run on Wolverine, serving as an alternate future take of the character in a Marvel Universe taken over by villains.

James Mangold‘s film uses that source loosely, going for a different interpretation and an ultimately final take on the character’s last moments in the continuity of Fox’s X-Men films. There are some similarities, but not many.

It’s still pretty amazing to see McNiven rendering Jackman and Dafne Keen’s likenesses as Logan and Laura AKA X-23, and his design skills are on full display with an impressive take on the characters. โ€จ

The reveal, courtesy of IGN, also includes a discussion with McNiven about how he got the job and what went in to designing the covers.

I knew they wanted to get a flavor of the Old Man Logan stuff that I did, but also to hue to the character, the actor’s likenesses. It was definitely a new skill set that I had to sort of figure out. It was fun.

I did a crapload of different designs. Because we were doing the front and the back and an illustration for the inside, at one point we had different designs for the front and the back. There were some characters we added, some we took away and slowly morphed it into what the final product is. It was a pleasant surprise to find people that really knew what they wanted to do and had a cool vision, and at the same time let me do what I do best.

The end result is a perfect blend of McNiven’s iconic aesthetic matching the tone and scope of the film, fitting for a special edition offering of the wonderful movie.

The special edition package will also include Logan Noir, the recently announced black-and-white version of the movie.

If you can’t wait to get your hands on this steel book special edition, the movie will be out on Digital HD May 16.
