X-Men Blue #1 ended with a bit of a shocker, as it was revealed that Magneto was actually calling the shots for the young, time-displaced mutant team. Jean Grey may be running the show in the field, but it’s Magneto who is dishing out the assignments.

Remember, this group of mutants – The young versions of Jean, Cyclops, Beast, Angel, and Iceman – is from another time. When they were that age, Magneto was their greatest foe. We know that the villain has come a long way since the early days of the X-Men, but these kids don’t know that.
So, why are they working with him?
In X-Men Blue #2, flashbacks showed how Jean and Magneto met in the current timeline. He tried to convince her to work together, and she obviously refused. Jean didn’t come to trust Magneto until he voluntarily removed his helmet, and allowed her into his mind. If you’ve known Magneto for any length of time, you understand how big of a deal this is.
Jean came to trust Magneto, and got the team on board with the set-up as well. However, Magneto still appears to be hiding something from the others.
At the end of issue #2, Magneto walked into the basement of the X-Men base in Madripoor. He revealed an enormous machine down there, and commented that he is going to be using the machine to send the X-Men back to their original time.

What’s unclear here, is whether or not Jean Grey knows about this plan. She could know about this plan, and agreed to it in order to restore their former lives. On the flip-side, Magneto could be sending them back on his own.
No matter the motivation, there is something big brewing in X-Men Blue. Make sure to pick up issue #3 on May 10!
