Marvel Asks Fans To Be Patient With Secret Empire

Marvel Comics is kicking off its big summer 2017 crossover event with Secret Empire this week – a storyline that follow Steve Rogers/Captain America, now brainwashed into thinking he’s a HYDRA agents, leading a HYDRA organization (and a lot of supervillains) in an attempted takeover of the Marvel Universe.

It would be an understatement to say that Marvel fans have been less than happy with the Steve Rogers “Agent of HYDRA” storyline. In fact, there’s been such uproar about how Marvel has fundamentally changed Captain America’s and values that Secret Empire is catching serious blowback, after just one issue (Issue #0) has been released.

Now, as Secret Empire prepares to release its official first issue, Marvel is trying to get ahead of the negative impression surrounding the storyline, by promising fans that following the story to its end will be well worth the aggravation.

Marvel Asks Fans Patient with Secret Empire

In a statement released to ABCย News, Marvel addressed theย Secret Empireย backlash, and put out a statement regarding the matter. You can check out what the publisher had to say, by reading below.ย

“With Marvel Comics’ ‘Secret Empire,’ the forces of Hydra have taken over and, due to the villainous actions of the Red Skull, have manipulated Marvel’s greatest hero, Captain America, and forced him to adopt their cause.ย At Marvel, we want to assure all of our fans that we hear your concerns about aligning Captain America with Hydra and we politely ask you to allow the story to unfold before coming to any conclusion.”

“What you will see at the end of this journey is that his heart and soul — his core values, not his muscle or his shield — are what save the day against Hydra and will further prove that our heroes will always stand against oppression and show that good will always triumph over evil,”

Marvel fans have been easily triggered by this whole story arc. While it is a drastic change to Steve Rogers’ character, and is arguably a far-fetched retcon of Marvel Comics history, fans tend to forget that everything in comics is fluid and impermanent. While fans may dislike or disagree with Steve Rogers, Agent of HYDRA, it’s naive to assume that the classic Captain America won’t eventually make his return.ย
