Later this year, Netflix will go real dark with one of it’s newest Marvel series. Shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones were praised for their gritty tone, but the two series will have nothing on The Punisher. Netflix is expected to release the first season of the bloody show after Marvel’s The Defenders airs. Filming on The Punisher wrapped last month, leaving Marvel to dive into the project’s post-production.

So far, little information has been given about The Punisher, but one cast member is now opening up a bit about filming the series. In a recent chat with W Magazine, Ben Barnes was asked about his time working on the violent series. Here’s what the actor had to say:
“There was a lot of night work and lot of action and a lot of cold nights, and a lot of the aggressive passion. You have to give it anything when you are around that energy.”
For fans, Barnes’ words will be of little surprise. The Punisher is known for many things, but the deadly vigilante is a role model for outward aggression. Fans got a glimpse of Frank Castle’s rage in the second season of Daredevil, and audiences flinched as they watched the traumatized ex-soldier bathe himself in the blood of his enemies.
There is no telling what kind of conflict the Punisher will get involved in when his standalone series drops, but it won’t be a peaceful one. Barnes is just one of a few actors confirmed to star in the series, and it looks as if the actor will be a villain of sorts. Barnes will be playing Billy Russo, a mysterious figure who has ties to Frank Castle’s military past.
Jon Bernthal debuted as Frank Castle, the Punisher, in Marvel’s Daredevil Season 2. He will reprise the role for The Punisher, which is the first Marvel spinoff series on Netflix. The series also stars Ben Barnes, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Amber Rose Revah, Deborah Ann Woll, Daniel Webber, Jason R. Moore, Paul Schulze, Jaime Ray Newman, and Michael Nathanson. Steve Lightfoot serves as the showrunner.
Filming on The Punisher began in October 2016 and ended in April 2017. The Punisher will release in late 2017, following the release of The Defenders, on Netflix.
The Punisher is based on the Marvel Comics character created by Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr., and Ross Andru, who debuted in Amazing Spider-Man #129 in 1974. Originally intended as a cautionary Spider-Man villain, the Punisher’s relentless, hardline vigilante tactics resonated with certain fans and turned him into a cult favorite. He has since starred in several ongoing series from Marvel Comics and three previous live-action movies: one starring Dolph Lundgren in 1989, another starring Thomas Jane in 2004, and Punisher: War Zone starring Ray Stevenson in 2004.
