Joe Quesada To Direct Agents Of SHIELD Spin-Off

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is currently on midseason break, but fans can still visit the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the digital miniseries Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: Slingshot. The series focuses on Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez of Quake’s Secret Warriors, whose codename in the Marvel Comics Universe is Slingshot.

ABC recently revealed that the digital series will mark the directorial debut of a talent familiar to many Marvel Comics fans, Joe Quesada.

“Joe Quesada is one of the legendary, Shaolin ninja-priests of Marvel,” joked Agents of SHIELD star Clark Gregg. In actuality, Quesada is Marvel Entertainment’s chief creative officer and a former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics. “We’ve been friends for a long time and it’s really a treat to get him to be out here and to get to work with him the first time he directs something.”

Slingshot star Natalia Cordova-Buckley admits she didn’t know who Quesada was until midway through the filming of the episode but was truly impressed by his detailed storyboards.

“Firstly, his storyboards felt like it was a comic book; like I was watching myself drawn into a comic book,” Cordova-Buckley says.

“Joe Quesada’s hand-drawn storyboards for this episode were unbelievable, and will soon be all over the walls of my house in frames,” says Gregg.

“My storyboards are probably a little more detailed than they need to be,” Quesada admits, “just because that’s the world that I come from, from the world of comics, where I sort of see shots, and the same rules of storytelling, whether in film or in television, apply directly to comics books when you do it right.”

“Where I saw my career going…was to continue working in comics and then graduate to directing either in film or in television,” Quesada recalls. “Then the Marvel gig came up and life took a different track. So now, it’s interesting how it came back around full circle.”

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: Slingshot debuts today on the ABC website.
