Yesterday we reported that a new X-Men movie was starting production in Montreal in spring of 2017, but didn’t have all the details about which film from the X-Men movie universe would be going in front of cameras.

Today, we have a followup to that same story that basically answers the question of the mysterious production, and it seems as though it will be none other than X-Men spinoff New Mutants that shoots in 2017.

The New Mutants (created in 1982 by writer Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod) were a bunch of angsty and sarcastic teenage mutants in training at Professor Xavier’s school; some members like Deadpool went onto form X-Force.

They were kids – too young to be X-Men, but old enough to start the training that would allow them to fully understand and harness their profound mutant powers

New Mutants are bit more violent than the traditional X-Men, but the director’s take on the film is said to be a mix of YA comedy and horror elements, most like Chris Claremont version of the comic.

It’s rumored that the film adaptation from director Josh Boone will stick with that classic team roster that would include Wolfsbane, Magik, Sunspot, Mirage and Cannonball – bringing lesser known mutants from the X-Men Comics to the big screen.

So…who are these mutant kids anyway? Let’s get to know them a bit better…

Wolfsbane

When Rahne Sinclair first developed her mutant power of lycanthropy as a young girl, she was mistaken for a werewolf by the entire town she lived in.

A group of terrified, religious freaks believed that she had been possessed by the devil.

Led by Reverend Craig (her real like father who raised her within the confines of a strick religious code) they chased Rahne across the Scottish highlands.

Her mother was a prostitute, so Rahn was never really accepted by her father.

At the end of the chase, Rahne fell unconscious and reverted to her naked human form at the feet of Dr. MacTaggert, who took her under her protection to be cared for and trained by Professor X.

It is rumored that Game of Throne’s star Maisie Williams is attached to play Wolfsbane in the New Mutants movie.

Magik

Magik was born in Russia along with her two mutant brothers Collosus and the cosmonaut, Mikhail Rasputin.

She was taken at the age of 6 by Belasco and teleported to Limbo, were her and many other X-Men we stuck, unable to get back to Earth.

Illyana Rasputina joined the New Mutants after getting our of Limbo

Illyana quickly learned that she was not nearly as powerful a sorceress on Earth as she was in Limbo, but she still retained an immunity to the most powerful telepathic probes.

Even through rigerous training she continued to struggle with the use of her mutant powers and often sent the other New Mutant members to the wrong place or time.

She also used her powers to sumon demons and other terrifying beings from Limbo to help her on Earth…which always turned out quite interesting.

Sunspot

Roberto da Costa (son of a mega billionaire) first realized his mutant powers when he was only fourteen and playing in a championship soccer match for his school team in Rio.

Another player knocked da Costa to the ground for a stupid reason, so the hot-headed da Costa manifested his superhuman strength and brutally beat the other player to almost death.

His body and clothing temporarily turned black in the process and well, he was terrified.

Donald Pierce also tried to use Sunspot against The New Mutants, but clearly that didn’t work out in his favor.

A Brazilian mutant, Sunspot possesses the ability to absorb and channel solar power, after he learned how to control it.

Samuel Zachery Guthrie was the oldest son of a large Kentucky farming family.

As a little kid Sam was involved in genetic testing by the Deviants, because well, he was a mutant. His mind was wiped of these tragic events

But later on, his poor dad died from spending his working life in the coal mines, so Sam tried to help out his family by working in the same mines that poisoned his dad.

Not too smart, Sam!

On his first day, Sam and his friend Lewis got trapped in the coal mine.

Sam naturally panicked and accidentally manifested his mutant blasting powers and saved himself and Lewis from the collapse.

The coal blasting incident Donald Peirce to find Sam, who recruited him in a plot to attack The New Mutants, but in the end Sam turned against evil Pierce.

Professor X saw the good inside Sam and invited him to join the rest of the New Mutants.

Cannonball possesses the ability to bodily generate thermo-chemical energy and release it through his skin. Accompanied by smoke, flame, and condensation, the equal and opposite reaction to this energy release propels his body through the air like a human rocket.

Mirage

Danielle “Dani” Moonstar is a Native American of the Cheyenne Nation.

Moonstar’s mutant powers emerged at puberty, but she could not control her ability to create visible images of people’s greatest fears, which inevitably caused her to be shunned.

Manifesting the images at unexpected moments alienated her from everyone in her community, except for her parents William and Peg Lonestar.

Her grandfather, the chief and shaman Black Eagle sent her to Professor X for training after she correctly predicted her own parent’s death.

She also has nightmares and numerous run-ins with a Demon Bear, which occur during her time with the New Mutants.
