X-Men movie spinoff New Mutants is quickly amassing an impressive cast. Recently, we learned that Split star Anya Taylor–Joy and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams were joining the spinoff film as two iconic X-Men characters (Magik and Wolfsbane, respectively); now comes word that Marvel Netflix star Rosario Dawson is joining New Mutants, as another well-known X-Men character.

THR reports that Dawson is already in talks to play X-Men member Dr. Cecilia Reyes. Reyes was created during the late ’90s era of the comics: the Puerto Rican character was a NYC trauma surgeon, who was outed as a mutant by a government Sentinel program called “Operation: Zero Tolerance.” Once she learned that she was a mutant (whose ability is instinctively generating a protective field around her body) , Reyes eventually went on to work as the X-Men‘s doctor, in the mutant haven of Utopia.
According to THR, Dawson’s movie version of Reyes would be a bit different than her comic book counterpart: “Dawson will play Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself. The character assumes a mentor role for the group of fledgling heroes.”
In addition to Dawson, New Mutants is reportedly also looking to cast a tall male actor, who may be playing the film’s villain, and has supposedly just landed an actor to play iconic X-Men/New Mutants character, Sunspot. While plot details are still unconfirmed, speculation is that the New Mutants movie will be based on the famous supernatural-themed “Demon Bear” storyline.
New Mutants is gearing up for production this year, and is set to bow in theaters on April 13, 2018. Deadpool 2 will ollow that up on June 1.
