While the numbers won’t be official until Tuesday morning, which is when studios report their final New Year’s weekend figures, comScore is reporting that 2016 was a record year at the North America box office.

According to global media measurement and analytics company, the domestic box office earned $11.4 billion in the past year, making it the highest-grossing year in history. The previous record was $11.14 and was set in 2015. The 2016 tally was up 2.1 percent from 2015.
Is the news worth celebrating? Well, yes and no. Since attendance stayed the same from 2015 to 2016 โ which is a small victory of sorts โ the main reason we have a new box office record, according to Box Office Mojo, is because ticket prices went up roughly 18 cents from 2015.
Of all the studios, Disney was easily the biggest winner. It had the top three highest-grossing films โ Finding Dory, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Captain America: Civil War โ and three more finished in the top ten as well โ The Jungle Book, Zootopia, and Doctor Strange.
“Forgetful fish, super-heroes, household pets and space travelers led the charge in a year that was marked by an incredibly diverse selection of films from every genre and of every size and scope from all the studios,” said Paul Dergarabedian, comScore’s senior media analyst, in a Sunday press release.
