Wolverine is known for many things. His love of cigars, his ample wardrobe of white undershirts, and his keen ability to break the laws of continuity by appearing in seven books all in the same month.

Logan‘s also received a fair amount of costume redesigns over the years, all with varying amounts of success. From the leather phase of the Grant Morrison run and Bryan Singer’s X-Films to the loud yellow and blue of the character’s creation to everything in between (including the oh so subtle Dark Claw), his looks have run the gamut.

Out of the clutter though a few costumes have taken hold, considered to be the best of the lot. ComicBook.com decided to rank the best of the best, so hit the next slide to see where your favorite Wolverine costume came in.

Days Of Future Past

Days of Future Past is looked at as one of the stronger movie entries in the X-Men series, righting many of the wrongs from the earlier films (namely X-Men: The Last Stand).

While it didn’t deviate from the Logan focus of earlier projects, it did implement the best costume for the fan favorite seen thus far, at least on film. The suit still had a fair amount of black in it, but it wasn’t the dated members-only look from before and had a genuine sleekness to it. It also had some small accents of color, even if that color was light brown.

It’s not yellow mind you, but at least it’s something.

Age Of Apocalypse

Speaking of alternate timelines, one of the most popular ones in X-Men history is the Age of Apocalypse.

Wolverine was a heavy fixture in that storyline, and he received a redesign fitting with the rest of that series’ darker tone. In Age of Apocalypse, Wolverine and Cyclops were locked in a brutal battle, and Cylcops took Logan’s hand clean off. Logan returned the favor by taking one of his eyes, so it’s not like he didn’t get his win back so to speak.

While Logan has the ability to regenerate, he decided to fit a metal stump over his arm so the hand wouldn’t grow back, always wanting a reminder of what Cyclops did to him.

While the suit itself is rather basic, consisting of a red and blue suit and crazy hair, the metal stump is instantly recognizable, and the look continuesย to be a fan favorite.

Brown And Tan

Introduced in 1980, Wolverine’s brown and tan costume quickly became a fan favorite.

The colors are rather bland on their own, but together with a brighter belt they just seem to work for some reason. John Byrne introducedย the suit because of his dislike of the classic yellow and blue, and there are many fans who agree with Byrne’s observations.

The suit fits Logan’s more rugged personality,ย and you can credit his costume with ushering in the arm hair era as well, which continues to be a staple to this day.

X-Force

When Cyclops needed a special ops team, he of course enlisted the help of Wolverine.

A new team means a new costume, and Wolverine and the rest of the group got matching black and silver suits. The actual design is rather basic, but combined with the red accents in the eyes and X-symbol it all comes together into one fantastic costume.

It fit with the tone of the series, and especially in the handsย of artists like Clayton Crain and Simone Bianchi, the suit just looked stunning on the page.

Yellow And Blue (Astonishing X-Men)

The character started out in yellow and blue, but the costume has come a long way from the original in the 1970’s.

When Joss Whedon and John Cassaday introduced their team of X-Men in Astonishing X-Men, the group was coming off of the black and yellow jacket era of Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run. In a return to the more comic roots, the cast all got new suits, including Logan.

The look blends the best parts of the Brown and Tan costume (chunky belt, no sleeves) and the original yellow and blue (shorter ears, color scheme), and modernizes them with some new style lines and a darker blue used on the majority of the suit. The costume looks great in action as well, and Wolverine still looks like he could kill you with one hand tied behind his back despite the brighter colors. That’s why this costume takes the top spot!
