Dillon had a talent for depicting characters who had an edge and were darker in tone. He didn’t shy away from the darker areas, and as a result has crafted numerous memorable scenes that have been lovingly depicted on screen.
One of the first examples that come to mind is Dillon’s now iconic scene in Daredevil #3 titled “The Choice”, where Daredevil awakes to a precarious situation involving Frank Castle. Castle has chained him up on the roof and taped a revolver to his hand. He gives Daredevil the choice of either choosing to become a killer and shoot him before he can shoot someone else, or choose not to and let the man die.
“If you don’t shoot you’ve got a death on your conscience. A death you could have prevented. If you do shoot, you’re a killer.” When Daredevil asks what kind of choice is that, Castle says” “The one I make every time I pull the trigger.”
Fans who watched the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil series know that this sequence was adapted extremely faithfully, and was used extensively in the marketing campaign in the lead-up to the show’s premiere. Dillon’s work leapt right off the page and onto the screen, but it wasn’t the last time he would see his work do so.
AMC made a bold move and adapted Garth Enis and Steve Dillon’s extremely popular series Preacher to television, a feat many thought impossible. The show has steadily built up a following, depicting the events that led up to issue #1. For fans of the comic, the show is littered with numerous frame for frame translations from the book, and even though it seemed like a longshot not too long ago, Dillon finally got to see his seminal work make it to mainstream audiences everywhere.
In addition to these two, we’ve included some of our favorite Dillon pieces in the gallery, but if you have favorites of your own, let us know what they are in the comments so we can add them to the gallery.
