20th Century FOX is still on the hunt for someone to take on the role of Cable for its anticipated Deadpool 2, but at least they’ve already found their Domino. The popular role has gone to Atlanta actress Zazie Beetz, a casting everyone seems relatively happy with. While it didn’t depict Zazie specifically, some recent concept art of the character gave some indicator of what the character might look like on screen.

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld counts himself as a big fan of the casting and recently spoke to ComicBook.com about his upcoming graphic novel Deadpool: Bad Blood. He’ll be revealing a big first look at the project at WonderCon, but he has more than a few thoughts on the casting of Zazie.

“Domino is all about, as an actress and as the character that is going to be on the screen you already allude to it, it’s all about the sass. You gotta understand, your gonna go up against Wade Wilson, who is, in this movie is Ryan Reynolds and trust … I’m telling you, having been around Ryan multiple times that mouth cannot be stopped. He … it’s point … I don’t think he can say the jokes as fast as they are backed up in his head. So, you need … some of these people be like “oh hey, this girl should have been Domino, and pick out actress a through z” and I’d be like “I’m not sure that they can keep up with him” and oh my gosh, I’m not sure that Ryan’s gonna keep up with her. I think Ryan Reynolds is gonna have to work hard to keep up with Zazie. I mean, wow. You just go “That chemistry is going to be spectacular”. And that’s what it comes down to is the chemistry with these characters.”

Liefeld compared the potential for Zazie and Ryan to Ryan’s onscreen chemistry with Vanessa, aka Morena Baccarin. “I mean, look how Tim Miller at the end, so right before Deadpool went to casting. This is a great story. Right before Deadpool, number one … I’m sorry … I’d say about six weeks before cameras were shooting, Tim generously sent me the candidates, the final candidates for Vanessa. He’s like “Rob, I’m struggling. Help me out here” and he sent them to me and I said “Yeah” look, he gave me like photos and I did not get … he did not send me screen tests. He just sent me the three actresses, their photos and said “Dude, it’s down to these three. Who, if you had to choose, I’m just soliciting opinions.” And I remember going, only one of these in my mind can verbally keep up with Ryan. I expressed my choice to him, and it turned to that Morena Baccarin was the perfect choice to be Vanessa and look at how they spar together on screen. I mean, Ryan’s gotta have a strong lead opposite him so Zazie is going to be great.”

The original Deadpool opened up the already popular character to a whole new legion of fans, and the sequel will do the same for Domino, a sequel that already has a 4.24 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticipation rankings. “Again, I just think it opens up the world. I’ve said, if you go back, I tweeted last summer, that role is going to be adored by fans. Get ready to see Domino’s all over your convention floor. I already see a lot of Domino’s at conventions, but because she, honestly she’s a really fun but relatively simple cosplay I would get ready for a lot of her.”

Deadpool: Bad Blood hits comic shops on May 17th. Deadpool 2 lands in theaters on March 2, 2018.
