One of the standout performances in the Guardians of the Galaxy films is one that goes virtually unseen, with Sean Gunn standing in for the CGI Rocket on set. In addition to giving the rest of the actors something to work off of, Gunn’s movements can be reflected in the final animation, making the virtual character feel more alive. Gunn has pulled double duty in the films, also playing the Ravager Kraglin, forcing him to play two different characters while interacting with himself.

When speaking with ComicBook.com at Heroes and Villains Con, the actor discussed how he pulls off the complicated scenes.

“Those are definitely the trickiest scenes to shoot,” Gunn confessed. “We tend to just kind of shoot around it. We shoot the scene from multiple angles. Rocket doesn’t have to be in every take. We only really need one, sometimes two good reference shots for Rocket before I can stand out. Kraglin is obviously there for every take.”

More than just standing in a position for reference, the actor must also gives full-fledged performances as both characters, which is easier said than done.

“It takes a little longer, but I have to be mentally prepared and focused to play the scene from two different perspectives, but that’s my job,” Gunn pointed out.

With two films under his belt as the dual characters, the actor has earned a new skill.

“I’ve gotten very good at knowing exactly how tall Rocket it,” the actor pointed out. “My task, when I’m shooting any scene, is to get my eyes to Rocket’s eye level and to keep them there throughout the scene, whether he’s walking or whatever it is. So physically, I have to do a lot to keep his eyes at eye level. But I also know, sometimes, even better than the people around on set, I know exactly how tall Rocket would be at any given time.

Gunn being able to control his six-foot-tall frame down to the eye-line of a two-foot-tall super hero is no easy feat, which might be why director James Gunn had cast his brother, possibly to make up for any sibling rivalries.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be available on Digital HD on August 8th; and Blu-ray/DVD on August 22nd.
