Spider-Man’s Daughter Gets A Superhero Name

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows has taken the concept of Spider-Man and applied to the entire Parker family.

Continuing the story that began as part of the Secret Wars event, Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, written by Gerry Conway with art by Ryan Stegman, takes place on an alternate Earth (Earth-18119) where Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage was never dissolved by Mephisto. The two even had a child, Anna-May Parker.

During the events of the original Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows miniseries, Spider-Man took on the Regent, a supervillain who uses technology to gain the combined powers of every other superhero or supervillain that he has defeated. Now, Spider-Man is using the technology that he salvaged from the Regent’s base to share his spider powers with Mary Jane. MJ now even has her own costume and, as of Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #2, her own superhero identity, Spinneret.

Little Annie didn’t need Regent’s tech to keep up with her parents because she inherited the spider powers of her father at birth, though they did not manifest until later on. Peter and Mary Jane fashioned a costume for Annie, but it was mostly designed to keep her safe with lots of padding and a helmet to cushion her should she fall while swinging around.

Spider-Man has wanted to keep Annie ought of the family business, but after their brawl with the Mole Man, Spinneret convinced Peter that it was no use. Annie begged her parents for her own superhero codename, and Spider-Man finally acquiesced, bestowing upon his daughter the superhero name “Spiderling.”

Annie tried to convince her father to give her a different name, but Peter’s mind was made up. Annie even especially pushed for “Spider-Girl,” but Spider-Man tells her that name is already taken, perhaps noted as a reference to May Parker, Spider-Man’s other alternate reality superhero daughter.
