In a flashback to three years ago, Polaris talks to Eclipse outside the Atlanta hideout of the mutant underground. Eclipse has only recently joined the group. Polaris recalls how the building was condemned after the Oakwood riots when the National Guard stormed a mutant orphanage nearby and one of the young mutants lost control and destroys the entire area. Eclipse wonders what they did in a past life to deserve to live like this, but Polaris says she wouldn’t trade her gifts for anything.

Polaris asks what Eclipse did for fun with his powers. When he doesn’t give an answer, she shows off how – while wearing metal bracelets and steel-toe boots, she can use her magnetic gifts to fly. This convinces Eclipse to show Polaris how he can use his powers to create a kind of light show through shards of broken glass. When their hands touch the combination of Polaris’ magnetic powers and Eclipse’s light powers creates an aurora borealis. They share their first kiss.
In the present day, Jace Turner visits Polaris in her cell. Turner tells Polaris he’s about to take down the mutant underground, beginning with Eclipse. He offers to arrange for Polaris and Eclipse to have visits with their child if she agrees to help him now. She refuses.
Eclipse and Thunderbird are arguing, again, about breaking into the prison to rescue Polaris. Eclipse wants to use Blink’s powers, but Thunderbird and Caitlin are worried after what Blink went through after the last time. Dreamer backs Eclipse and encourages Thunderbird to train Blink. Caitlin steps in and encourages them to try to go through legal means, reaching out to loyal or a congressperson. The mutants tell her it’s too dangerous to expose themselves while they’re living in secret.
Lauren and Andy try to keep themselves entertained with a moldy Monopoly set. Lauren gets upset when Andy says he wants to be the shoe because that’s what Reed always plays as.
Blink tells Thunderbird that her powers have been “broken” ever since she got sick and that she also got a mark over her eye. Thunderbird tells her all powers are somewhat unreliable and that they can work on it and get her powers back.
Dreamer pulls Thunderbird aside and asks how things went. Thunderbird tells Dreamer that she’s struggling, but Dreamer says they don’t have time. She offers to help by using her breath powers to implant memories in Blink, but Thunderbird reminds her of the times that went wrong. He says he doesn’t want to take shortcuts.
Caitlin wakes Lauren and Andy to tell them that she’s going to their Uncle Danny’s house. The kids insist on going with her to protect her if something happens.
Act II

Reed is providing Turner with information on his meeting with Eclipse. They make a plan to make contact with the bartender from Tex’sย Lounge, assuming he has a line to the Mutant Underground.
Thunderbirdย and Blink talk about her powers some more. She believes she has to be scared to access her powers but Thunderbird shares some Marine training about simply holding on to something that makes her happy to drum up to make her happy.
Blink tries it with a “warm jelly doughnut.” She’s able to spark a small portal but can only hold it stable for a moment. Thunderbird’s tracking abilities kick in and notices and footprints and other signs of the Struckers leaving the hideout.
Thunderbird fills in Eclipse and tells them that they have to go after them. If the Struckers get caught, they all get caught.
The Struckersย bicker while they make the long walk to “Uncle Danny’s” house. Andy uses his powers to rob an ATM so they’ll have money to take a cab.
Act III

Dreamer talks to Blink, who is still struggling with her powers, back at the hideout. Dreamer encourages Blink to keep at it.
The Struckers arrive at Danny’s. He opens the door and hugs Caitlin. He lets them in. He and his son share some pizza with the Struckers. Andy and Lauren try to talk to their cousin about where they’ve been. He’s excited, but Danny doesn’t like it and sends them away.
Caitlin asks Danny, who is a lawyer with connections, for help, but his connections have started turning on him because of what happened with them. Danny offers to give them cash and let them stay the night, but that’s all. He’s more concerned with his own immediate family than his sister’s.
Sentinel Services puts out a false APBย for Reed so that the bartender and the Mutant Underground will believe he escaped. Turner straps a tracker on Reed’s leg.
Reed finds the bartender by a dumpster in an alley. The bartender goes invisible and grabs a gun. Reed tries to convince the bartender that he’s just looking for his family. It works.
Act IV

The bartender leads Reed into a back room of Tex’sย lounge, where he’s introduced to a mother and child. They’ll all be brought to the drop point together in the evening. Apparently, they took the family’s father to Sentinel Services’ detention. They wanted to take the other two as well, but they escaped. The mother uses her gift to take Reed’s gunshot wound pain away.
Andy enjoys some Call of Duty with hisย cousin while Lauren uses a tablet. The cousin is more interested in seeing Andy’s powers. Lauren is startled to see that some kids had vandalized their old house with anti-mutant graffiti. Andy is upset when he realizes the kid in the photo is an old friend and his powers flare up for a moment, damaging one of his cousin’s trophies.
Turner gets a message from “Paula” encouraging him to be safe. The mutants begin to move out of the bar and Turner follows in the Sentinel Services disguised van.
The child sees Reed looking nervous and comforts him. Reed has a crisis of conscience and tells the others the truth about what’s happening and tells them to let him out. Reed jumps out of the van. The bartender is able to make the other vehicle invisible and Sentinel Services loses them. Reed makes it clear to Turner that there is no deal.
Act V

Polaris is still in her cell. She looks at all the metal adorning the small room, including the door. She uses her powers, fighting through the pain caused by her collar, screaming and bleeding from her nose as she rips the door open and crawls through. The guard finds her just as she passes out.
Thunderbirdย and Eclipse find Caitlin in Danny’s home. They argue and Danny wakes up and finds them all in the living room. Danny is furious that Caitlin brought mutants into his home. An angry, armed mob is forming outside of Danny’s home. Apparently, Danny’s son texted a picture of the trophy to a friend and word spread. They all argue about how to handle the situation. Danny decides to go outside himself.
Danny argues with the ringleader and tries to convince them to disperse, but the mob is determined to search the house. Andy becomes angry and blows off the door with his powers. The ringleader, Chuck, picks up his gun to shoot Andy. Thunderbirdย pulls Andy back and Eclipse heats up the gun so Chuck drops it. They all move towards their SUV and drive off, but the mob jumps in their vehicles and pursues.
Act VI

The mob opens fire on the SUV. Thunderbirdย calls ahead to the hideout to let Dreamer and Sage know what’s happening and prepare to help somehow.
Dreamer goes to Blink and tells her the other are in trouble. Dreamer blows pink smoke, her mutant power, on Blink, implanting memories of a loving relationship with Thunderbird. Now having someone to care about, Blink is convinced she can make a portal to rescue the others.
Dreamer and Blink go to the road outside and wait for the vehicles to arrive. Blink opens a portal to headquarters in the middle of the road, drawing on her false memories to fuel her power. Thunderbirdย speeds up the SUVย and it drives through the portal. Dreamer and Blink follow and are back inside the hideout.
Thunderbirdย exits the vehicle and tells Eclipse to take the others inside. Caitlin apologizes for what she did, but Eclipse admits that he would have done the same.
Blink hugs Thunderbird. He sends her inside and then asks Dreamer what she did. Dreamer tells Thunderbirdย that she gave Blink one of her old memories of them together.
Turner is frustrated with what has happened. He gets a call from Roderick Campbell. Campbell says he’s quite interested in the Strucker kids and proposes a partnership. Turner says they don’t hand suspects or prisoners over to contractorsย and hangs up.
The next day, Caitlin, Eclipse, and Thunderbirdย meet with Danny on a secluded road. Danny offers to let the Struckersย use their cabin in the smokey mountains. Danny has learned that Reed is alive and is being transferred to a top secret mutant detention center along with another mutant from the underground. Caitlin remains determined to get Reed back and returns to stand with Thunderbird and Eclipse.
