The Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer released Thursday on Jimmy Kimmel Live gave fans their first look at an upgrade to Peter Parker’s Spider-Man costume, the vaunted web wings.

While considered an “upgrade” by cinematic Spider-Man standards, the webbing underneath Spider-Man’s arms, which he can use to glide through the air, is actually a call back to Spider-Man’s original costume design by co-creator Steve Ditko.
So how do “web-wings” work exactly? Rhett Allain at Wired Magazine breaks it down, using gliding physics to model a trajectory for Spider-Man.
“What happens when Spider-Man jumps off a building? I can model his motion by assuming he has three forces acting on himโgravity, air drag, and lift,” Allain explains in the article.
We’ll leave the science explaining to Allain. The full article is a fun and worthy read.
Those wings are bound to come in handy when Spider-Man battle the flying villain called the Vulture, aka Adrian Toomes (played by Michael Keaton) in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
