The world of comics is full of powerful characters coming together to form unlikely partnerships, something regularly on display in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer for Thor: Ragnarok has shown that Thor asks his brother Loki for help, which results in the former villain fighting side-by-side with Hulk. Considering their violent encounter the last time they met one another, Tom Hiddleston claims the partnership holds plenty of surprises.

Hiddleston explained, “The way I see it is, in The Avengers, Hulk and Loki never really had a conversation. It was more of a physical meeting, an extended ‘group hug,’ shall we say.” He added, “It’s fun when the two of them re-meet in this. So you’ll see. I don’t wanna spoil it.”

Loki debuted in the first Thor, which planted the seeds of just how much deceit the trickster was capable of, ultimately pulling the strings to become the master manipulator at the heart of Marvel’s The Avengers. He was last seen in Thor: The Dark World, but Hiddleston teased that his character has undergone some drastic changes since we last saw him.

“I think he’s a mercurial spirit and the minute you try to define him, he changes shape,” the actor confesses. “He is the shape shifter in the pantheon, although events in Ragnarok try and inspire to change him forever, I think, but they change for everyone.”

Of Loki’s inspiration for that change, that falls squarely on the shoulders of Hela, played by Cate Blanchett.

Hiddleston points out, “The goddess of death shows up, and the stakes are high for everybody, so Loki perhaps more than ever, is challenged to define himself in the face of that threat.”

We’ll see exactly what changes Loki goes through when Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3.
