In the original Guardians of the Galaxy, Nebula was a henchman on loan to Ronan and eager to betray her “father,” Thanos. Beyond that, she was mostly characterized by pure aggression and a rivalry with her sister, but there was little explanation of her motivations.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 revealed much more, including how Nebula became a cyborg, which in turn illuminated Nebula’s true motivations and the reason for her rivalry with Gamora.

Nebula is given a moment to monolog in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In that monolog, she recalls how Thanos would pit her and Gamora against each other. Whichever of them lost would have one of their body parts replaced with something cybernetic so that they would be better. Gamora won every time, which is how Nebula ended up with so many cyborg parts.

Later, Nebula catches up with Gamora and the two fight near to the death. In that moment, Nebula breaks and reveals the reason she hates Gamora so much. All she ever wanted was a sister. All they had was each other, and Gamora kept insisting on winning, allowing Thanos to continue to tear Nebula apart.

Suddenly, Nebula’s story comes into focus as that of an abused child. Fans will see if she gets her revenge when both she and Thanos appear in Avengers: Infinity War
