Yesterday we reported that a new X-Men movie was starting production in Montreal in spring of 2017, but didn’t have all the details about which film from the X-Men movie universe would be going in front of cameras.

Today, we have a followup to that same story that basically answers the question of the mysterious production, and it seems as though it will be none other than X-Men spinoff New Mutants that shoots in 2017!
After the buzz created by the story reported by Comicbook.com and others, New Mutants director Josh Boone The Fault in Our Stars tweeted out the following:
New X-Men film set to start shooting May https://t.co/JnHRXAg5ie via @denofgeek Hmmmm, what movie could it be?

That’s a pretty solid confirmation if ever there was one!
For those who don’t know: New Mutants was a Marvel Comic book that followed the younger students at Prof. Xavier’s School for the Gifted; they also were, in turn, a sort of junior X-Men squad. The team eventually evolved into the more militant X-Force under Cable’s leadership, and later was replaced by other “young X-Men” squads like Generation X and the New X-Men.
Early in October it was established that Boone had finished work on a New Mutants script draft. Earlier this year it was rumored that the film will stick close to the early Chris Claremont version of the comic, with a classic team roster that could include Wolfsbane, Magik, Sunspot, Mirage, Cannonball and possibly Alexandra Shipp’s Storm from X-Men: Apocalypse.
With Boone as the director, a YA approach to the X-Men mythos is what fans should expect. How exactly that translates into a blockbuster movie remains to be seen; the regular X-Men movies have been heavy on drama that’s not entirely specific to adulthood (and often tied to pubescent angst), so the distinctions may need to be stylistic, more so than narrative.

X-Men: Apocalypse is on home video. Logan hits theaters on March 3rd, 2017. Deadpool 2 is eyeing aMarch 2, 2018 release and New Mutants could be heading for a 2018 release, as well.
