Zendaya - Spider-Man

It looks like the mystery has finally been solved: Zendaya will play Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker's eventual love interest (although probably not anytime soon in this franchise), in Spider-Man: Homecoming, according to TheWrap.

The teen star was cast in an unidentified "key role" just before the movie went into production, and TheWrap says that there are "hints" in the screenplay that indicate she will play Mary Jane, the character most recently played onscreen by Kirsten Dunst.

Divergent's Shailene Woodley was cast in the role for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but her part was cut from the final film. As with The Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Homecoming will be set during Peter Parker's high school career, and in this case, he'll be a bit younger. It's likely that Mary Jane will not immediately be his love interest, although she might be the popular girl he has a crush on

You can check out our Comic Con International: San Diego interview with Zendaya, in which she was tight-lipped about what character she might play, below.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will feature the teenaged wallcrawler deal with the perils of high school on top of battling supervillains and being a superhero in New York. Tom Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker, while Michael Keaton has been tapped to play the Vulture, one of several villains who will allegedly appear in the film. Also appearing in the movie is Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier and Tony Revolori. Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei will also reprise their Captain America: Civil War roles as Tony Stark and Aunt May.
