Spawn will be making its return to the big screen soon, and one of the film’s producers couldn’t be happier with who is behind the helm.

In a recent interview with ComingSoon.net, Jason Blum discussed the partnership between Blumhouse Productions and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. As Blum explained, McFarlane is uniquely qualified to direct the film reboot, and not just because of his connection to the source material.

“I think he’s gonna do a great job.” Blum revealed. “Being a director encompasses a lot of different skills, but one of the most important skills is you have to be a great manager. You’re kind of a General of this army that you have to lead into battle every day, and he does that in his life every day running McFarlane Enterprises. So I think that translates to directing in a lot of ways.”

In the months since the film reboot was first announced, McFarlane has dropped a few hints about the script. The film will focus on both Spawn and Twitch, in what McFarlane has described to ComicBook.com as a Jaws-like set-up. And as Blum revealed, that approach has made him feel optimistic about the film reboot.

“We’ve had a great back-and-forth around developing the script.” Blum added. “I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think he could do a great job, but we’ll see. I have a good feeling about it.”

Small-Scale Horror

Another way that Spawn is set to break the mold of superhero movies will be through its scope. With past Blumhose Productions, such as Get Out, The Purge, and Paranormal Activity, proving to be successful on small budgets, Blumย says that the Spawn reboot will follow suit.

“One of the things is we’re keeping the scope of the script relatively contained, so that’s the biggest way.” Blumย explained.

Quite a few fans have warmed up to the idea of a low-budgetย Spawn film,ย as the creative freedom will take priority over heavy usage of special effects. Blumย hinted that this low-budget sensibility will extend off-camera as well, in a very interesting way.

“I think the other way is [Todd] and I aren’t paying ourselves any money out of the budget, nor will any of the actors, so that’s another way.” Blim added. “We’re using our usual tricks!”

It remains to be seen how the Spawn movie will come together, and which actors will end up populating the fictional world. But judging by Blum’s comments, the film will have plenty of passion behind it.

The Spawn reboot does not currently have a release date.
