There’s something so special about fantasy movies. They bring magical worlds to life and make the impossible seem possible. But the best ones don’t focus on dragons and swords as much as they do on telling a great story. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is the gold standard when it comes to fantasy movies, taking J.R.R. Tolkien’s work and building on it. However, Peter Jackson couldn’t fit in everything, which left the door open for something else. Prime Video decided to return to Middle-earth with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and while its reception has been mixed, there’s still more good than bad.

The Harry Potter franchise will also attempt to make the leap to the small screen with a series on HBO Max that will retell the story of the books. It’s only a matter of time before the powers that be turn their attention to other properties. Here are four of the best fantasy movies that still need to be turned into TV shows.
4) Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Turning a theme park ride into a movie doesn’t look good on paper. There just isn’t enough substance there to make something worthwhile. However, what Gore Verbinski and Co. did with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl pushes back against that narrative. With an interesting world full of fleshed-out characters, it’s shocking that Disney hasn’t considered bringing Captain Jack Sparrow to TV. The budget might be the biggest concern, but a Pirates of the Caribbean show would be worth the investment.
3) The Princess Bride

There aren’t many movies more quotable than Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride. Based on the novel by William Goldman, the film tells the story of Westley, who has to fight for the love of Princess Buttercup and meets some colorful characters along the way. The idea of exploring Inigo Montoya’s past and learning more about Fezzik is so enticing that it’s shocking no one has thought to do it in a TV show.
2) Shrek

It’s been a few years, but the Shrek franchise is preparing a major comeback. A fifth film is on the way that will bring back all the familiar voices, as well as a few new ones, including Zendaya. While DreamWorks might see Shrek and his friends as movie-only characters, there’s reason to ignore all of Far Far Away and its surrounding areas. Pick a character that’s worth dedicating more time to and give them their own show that has cameos from Shrek, Donkey, and the rest of the gang.
1) Pan’s Labyrinth

Guillermo del Toro knows a thing or two about creating a magical world. Despite taking place during a dark time, Pan’s Labyrinth might be his best one, featuring all kinds of magical creatures and unique structures. Del Toro tells a tight story in his 2006 film, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing left for it to give. A Pan’s Labyrinth show could retell the story of Ofeliaย or explore another corner of the underworld.
