The poster comes ahead of the newest trailer for the film, debuting Sunday on ABC during the American Music Awards.
A Wrinkle in Time sees three celestials — Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) — sending Meg Murry (Storm Reid), brother Charles (Deric McCabe) and friend Calvin (Levi Miller) journeying through time, space and alternate dimensions to rescue Meg and Charles’ scientist father, Dr. Alex Murry (Chris Pine).
Golden Globe and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker DuVernay (Selma) made headlines in 2016 as the first woman of color to direct a live-action movie with a budget in excess of $100 million, and A Wrinkle in Time is only the third — following Kathryn Bigelow’s K-19: The Widowmaker and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman — live-action movie to have a budget in this range that is helmed by a woman.

“I saw so much beauty in it, but also so much meaning,” DuVernay said of L’Engle’s 1962 novel. “She’s a very radical thinker and she embedded her sense of what society should and could be in this piece, and a lot of it I agree with. And through that, the story of this girl saving the world and being out there in the universe slaying the darkness, it also says a lot about slaying our own dragons.”
The filmmaker also saw an opportunity to bring more diversity to a diversity-starved genre. DuVernay explained:
The first image [I had in my head] was to place a brown girl in that role of Meg, a girl traveling to different planets and encountering beings and situations that I’d never seen a girl of color in. All of those scenes struck my fancy, and then it was also something that [Disney VP of production] Tendo Nagenda said to me, which I’ll never forget. One of the things that really made me want to read it was when he said, ‘Ava, imagine what you would do with the worlds.’ Worlds! ‘Planets no one’s ever seen or heard of,’ he said. There aren’t any other black women who have been invited to imagine what other planets in the universe might look and feel like. I was interested in that and in a heroine that looked like the girls I grew up with.
Walt Disney Pictures will release A Wrinkle in Time on March 9.
