Not long ago, a meme went around comic fandom circles, quoting a tweet from podcaster Brett White, making fun of DC and Warner Bros. for talking about how hard it is to make a Wonder Woman movie work, partially because (they claimed) fans of big-budget action movies won’t turn out for a female-led film.

DC/WB is all like “Wonder Woman’s too confusing for a movie!” and Marvel/Disney is all like “Here’s a raccoon with a machine gun” — Brett White (@brettwhite) August 12, 2013
Well, Marvel’s Louis D’Esposito seems to suggest that Marvel is no closer than Warner Bros. is to getting a female-led superhero film to the big screen, although he claims it’s mostly just because they already have so many super-guy films in active development.”There’s obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female lead superhero,” D’Esposito told ComingSoon.net. “We have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there’s an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?…It’s hard because we have a small group at Marvel. We do two films a year. To get those two films done and to do them right takes a lot of work and manpower. And female-power, obviously. To add a third film and to just put it in the slate right now is difficult. We have these next three, four, five films coming out and that’s what we’re really concentrating on.”Ironically, Captain Marvel is one of the most critically-acclaimed monthly comics Marvel is currently printing–but it’s been rumored to be in sales trouble for some time now, meaning that by the time they get around to considering the film, the comic might be gone.
