Paramount scooped up the rights to Captain Planet and the Planeteers and “is in negotiations with Jono Matt and Scream Queens star Glen Powell to write the script.”
Turner Program Services and DIC Entertainment-produced the animated series that originally aired from 1990 to 1992 and centered on five youths gifted with magical rings by Gaia, the spirit of the planet, to defend Earth from environmental threats.
Sources for THR report: “The story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed up hasbeen who needs the kids more than they need him.”
Obviously, this project is near and dear to DiCaprio’s heart, as he is a United Nations Messenger of Peace and often uses his celebrity to bring attention to renewable energy, climate change, and human rights. He even has a new documentary, Before the Flood, that has him meeting with people most affected by climate change. It’ll air on National Geographic channels October 30.
