There’s nothing like watching a superhero movie on the big screen. The action hits harder, and the score never sounds better than it does in a theater. Superman is an excellent example of a movie that should be seen on the biggest screen possible, as its flying sequences especially make the members of the audience feel like they’re soaring right alongside the Man of Steel. That’s not to say making a trip to the theaters is the only way to watch the film. In fact, there are quite a few benefits to slowing things down at home, especially since Superman is gearing up to stream on HBO Max.

One of the things that all superhero movies have in common is that they love to hide Easter eggs. Superman is no exception, with James Gunn filling his first DC Universe movie to the brim with references to the comics and other DC projects. Here are seven obscure DC Easter eggs that you probably missed in Superman.
7) Chocos Teases Another Member of the Justice League

The Hammer of Boravia makes his presence felt by attacking Metropolis. At one point, he sets his sights on an office building full of people who work for Chocos, a cookie company. In the pages of DC Comics, Martian Manhunter frequently eats the little treats, even going so far as to fight other heroes who try to take them away. The shape-shifting hero might get the chance to follow in his comic book counterpart’s footsteps on the big screen.
6) Perry White Hasn’t Wanted to Be Called “Chief” for Years

The Daily Planet plays a major role in Superman because Clark Kent, along with his good friends Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, works there. Being a reporter in Metropolis seems like a pretty laid-back gig, thanks to Perry White’s hands-off approach. Well, his employees don’t get away with anything because he scolds Jimmy for calling him “chief.” The line is a reference to a longstanding tradition in DC media where Perry pushes back against his title.
5) Jitters Is a DC Universe Mainstay

The kaiju that Lex Luthor sends to distract the Man of Steel does its job, putting countless lives in danger. Fortunately, Superman arrives in the nick of time and saves countless people, as well as a few businesses. The popular DC coffee shop, Jitters, which has a significant presence in the Arrowverse, is one of the stores in the kaiju’s path in Superman.
4) The Son of Another Superman Actor Is Present

One of Luthor’s primary weapons in his fight against his rival is the media, which he uses to give interviews about how bad a person Superman is. The reporter, played by Superman actor Christopher Reeve‘s son, Will Reeve, doesn’t give the villain the time of day, but he’s still there to report on the goings-on in Metropolis. Will is a reporter in real life as well, working for ABC.
3) Markovia Is Alive and Well in James Gunn’s Franchise

Two foreign nations, Boravia and Jarhanpur, play a major role in Superman, with Luthor helping pit the two countries against each other. They’re not the only fictional countries to get a shout-out, though, as Markovia is present on one of the maps that Eve Tessmacher sends to Jimmy. In the comics, Markovia is home to two heroes, Geo-Force and Terra.
2) Simon Stagg Isn’t Helping Make Billionaires Look Good

In addition to LuthorCorp, Stagg Industries is one of the major companies that has an office in Metropolis. Simon Stagg is the father-in-law of Metamorpho, who helps keep the Man of Steel in place in Luthor’s pocket universe prison. Since Stagg lets his grandchild get kidnapped by a rival and nearly die, he’s likely as bad as Luthor.
1) The Villains Continue to Fill Up Belle Reeve

Despite putting his evil heart into it, Luthor doesn’t get away with his scheme to take Superman off the board. Mister Terrific closes down his portal, and the authorities come and arrest him. They mention that they’re taking him to Belle Reeve, which is where the members of Amanda Waller’s Suicide Squad hang out. Luthor might do some recruiting before he returns in Man of Tomorrow.
Superman starts streaming on HBO Max on September 19.
