It’s been a decade since The Simpsons came onto the big screen, but fans are not satisfied with the cartoon family ignoring theaters for good. The 2007 debut of The Simpsons Movie left fans wondering if a second movie would happen, and it seems the crew behind the show are moving forward with sequel ideas.

UP NEXT: The Simpsons Movie Sequel Has Been Discussed
Recently, Entertainment Weekly had a chance to sit down with director David Silverman and talks about The Simpsons Movie 2. It was there the animator said his team is down for a second movie if Fox gives them the go-ahead.
“I’d love for there to be another one. We’re still a ways away from it. We talk about this and that. We’re thinking it over, but nothing’s happening just yet,” Silverman said. “It’s still daunting because it really knocked the stuffing out of us to do the movie and the show at the same time.”
It took an awful long time for The Simpsons to get its first movie underway. Discussions about the project date all the way back to 1990, and the feature finally hit theaters in 2007. If The Simpsons Movie 2 follows that trajectory, the sequel may not happen until 2024 at the earliest, but writer-producer Al Jean says the movie is already being developed.
“I’d say [it’s in] the very earliest stages. I certainly am cautious about a couple things. I wouldn’t want it to be risky in terms of budget, and I would not want it to be anything that we did purely for the money. I would want it to be a really great movie. I personally feel no need for another one unless it’s great,” Jean admitted.
Right now, it looks like the biggest thing standing in The Simpsons Movie sequel is its storyline. The crew wants the movie to feel necessary and avoid cash-grabbing accusations, so development is naturally slow going. There’s also a growing opinion amongst fans which is pushing for The Simpsons to retire; The series is moving into its 29th season, and the long-running show has slipped in holding attention as of late.
Still, there is one way Fox could reinvigorate interest in The Simpsons to give it a spectacle farewell. The release of The Simpsons Movie 2 could bow out the animated family for good, and it would give fans a chance to say goodbye to Springfield in all its suburban splendor.
