TRON fans, you might not have to be jealous of Shanghai Disneyland for much longer. The latter park opened an acclaimed ride last year based on TRON that allows riders to hop on their own life-sized Lightcycle. Now, Disney World may be looking to bring the beloved ride stateside.
According to a new report by WDW News Today, Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom may build it own TRON: Legacy-inspired ride. If you are not familiar with the TRON ride in Shanghai, then you will want to get acquainted. The Lightcycle ride is a fast roller coast which straps fans into their own motorbike. The attraction is under two minutes, but the high-octane attraction takes fans on a fast journey through one high tech world.
There is no telling when or if Disney will address rumors about the TRON ride, but fans can take a good guess. This week marks the 35th anniversary of TRON, and Disney will host its annual D23 Expo later this week. The event would be the perfect place to announce the new Disney World park, so fans should keep their ears perked for news on the attraction. It’s been more than two decades since Tron had a stateside Disney attraction, and renewed interest in the franchise would make a new ride a must-see for any park attendee in coming years.
In recent years, Disney did churn out a TRON revival which fizzled out with TRON: Legacy. A third film was never approved for the franchise, but that does not mean the futuristic series is a bust. Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter learned that Jared Leto is being eyed for an under-wraps TRON reboot. According to THR, “Sources say this new project is not a direct sequel and is being built out of the source code of the deleted Tron 3 script. Leto would play a character named Ares, who has not appeared on screen before but was a key player in that script.” No scriptwriter or director have been formally attached to the reboot as of yet.
