The television adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel American Gods is now in development at Starz (via TheWrap). Gaiman will serve as an executive producer, along with Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. FremantleMedia North America is producing the series.

"American Gods is a project that deserves to be made. With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil, we believe we can create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans and viewers," said Starz's managing director, Carmi Zlotnik.

Fuller will write the pilot with Green serving as the series showrunner.

American Gods is a modern fantasy road trip across America. An ex-convict named Shadow Moon gets hired as the bodyguard of the mysterious Mr. Wednesday and becomes mixed up in a war between the Old Gods and the new.

American Gods won the Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel when it was released in 2001. A television adaptation was previously in development at HBO, but they let go of the license after repeated failed attempts to come up with a script they were happy with. Hopefully, Starz is able to figure out how to crack it.
