Code Geass fans, it's time you listened up. In a surprise announced, Sunrise has confirmed they are working on several Code Geass projects, and one of them is a brand-new series. The studios said they are working on a third anime series along with a compilation film trilogy. So, welcome back to the Holy Britannian Empire.

Sunrise made their stunning announcement earlier today at an anniversary event commemorating Code Geass. The franchise is celebrating its 10th birthday, and Sunrise wanted to gift fans with a new animated series. The third series will be called Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection, and it will take place several years after Lelouch's Zero Requiem plan was enacted. Currently, there's no word on whether the new series will be formatted in episodic or film installments, but fans are clearly interested in revisiting the beloved franchise after the second series ended in 2008.

According to Sunrise, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection will be a direct sequel to the Zero Requiem storyline. The hero of the project is said to be Lelouch himself, meaning that the protagonist won't be as dead as fans all expected.

Along with the new anime, Sunrise also has plans to release a three-part film series based on Code Geass. The trilogy will recap all 50 episodes of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2. The streamlined films will give fans a comprehensive review of the series, and they will feature returning talent. The cast of voice actors will re-record their lines for the trilogy, and Sunrise said the films will also included additional scenes. The first of the three movies will premiere early next year.

While fans are excited to hear about Code Geass and its return, plenty are also confused as to how the series will make a return. The new series is said to be a sequel to the Zero Requiem storyline, but the arc ended with Lelouch dead. The protagonist, who had finally managed to stop Charles zi Britannia and take over the empire, used his death to create peace amongst the world's superpowers. The ruler decided he would destroy the world by taking down the United Federation of Nations and Black Knights, a decision that would obliterate his reputation. Before Lelouch could enact his plan, he then had his comrade Suzaku disguise himself as the vigilante Zero and execute Lelouch publicly. The hero's death was meant to cause enough chaos and relief that the world would then back away from the edge of war - and Lelouch was left to die in the arms of his sister.

Since the second anime ended with Lelouch dead, it will be interesting to see how Sunrise plans to bring back the protagonist. The new series is partially named 'Resurrection,' so some magic or even time-travel might be in order.

If you have not caught up on all things Code Geass, then you still have time. The series is a long one, but it's a well-received one. Aside from the first two seasons, there is another spin-off OVA series which fans were gifted recently. Code Geass: Akito the Exiled is a five-part miniseries that takes place between the two full seasons. Funimation has plans to release the OVA series on home video early next year, so fans will be able to binge it before Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection rears its head.
