It's not easy to write good science fiction, it being such a crowded genre, but the creator of Extant is certainly trying. The new CBS series, created by Mickey Fisher, draws some creative inspiration from the works of its executive producer, Steven Spielberg, but Fisher says he'd sometimes look across the Atlantic towards the showrunner of Doctor Who when he got really stuck.

"While I was writing the pilot, because I'm a big Doctor Who fan," Fisher says, "I had a post-it note on my monitor that said 'WWSMD,' 'What Would Stephen Moffat Do?' I think he's a great writer and I would look at that every now and again when I would get stuck, and I would ask and myself that question…and the answer was always that he would just write it better, so I would just try to do that."

I wonder if this mean Halle Berry will be putting on a fez whenever the script seems to be painting her into a corner.

Extant premieres July 9 on CBS.
