Guardians of the Galaxy

director James Gunn agrees with pretty much everybody else that there's huge potential for solo movies among the crew of cosmic con-artists and alien antiheroes featured in his film, which comes to Blu-ray in two weeks and is present available for download.

During an interview last night, ComicBook.com asked the director which characters he'd like to see get their own solo feature (with somebody else directing, if he were either to move on or to continue to focus on team films). He said, basically, that while it seems pretty obvious Groot and Rocket would be good candidates, he can't pick a favorite.

"I'd like to see solo features from all of them," Gunn said. "Obviously there's a great Rocket and Groot movie that could come out of this. I love many of the characters. I love all these characters so much it's hard to say who I would like to see made into a solo movie by someone else. It depends on who that someone else is. The truth is, I'd rather not see a solo movie made poorly by someone who didn't understand the character and whose heart wasn't in it."

Recent history suggests it's unlikely Marvel would hire somebody whose heart wasn't in it, but it's unlikely he was suggesting that they would -- merely saying that if there were to be a solo film set in the universe he's created with Guardians, he would want it to be great.

Guardians of the Galaxy is available digitally for immediate download on AmazonBarnes & Noble,UltraViolet and iTunes

You can see our full interview with Gunn this afternoon.
