This summer, fans have finally got some long-awaited updates on Pacific Rim 2. The anticipated sequel was in development for quite some time, leaving fan anxious to learn about what the film would have in store. Lately, moviegoers have been flooded with casting announcements for the film, and now they're being teased with news from Guillermo del Toro himself. The producer attended New York Comic Con and told ComicBook.com to expect huge surprises from the kaiju flick.

When asked about the film, del Toro confirmed Pacific Rim 2 is "active and in progress." The producer continued and confessed "there are a couple of huge surprises" lying in the film.

"As a geek, I just get so excited," he gushed.

However, del Toro refrained from saying much more about the project. The producer stressed he wanted to respect Steven S. DeKnight as a director and be "cautious" to not let any secrets slip.

"I did the first one," del Toro explained. "He's doing the second."

However, del Toro did talk about a rather interesting pre-production tale. The producer said that fans asked him about Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) joining the franchise all the time. Rumors had connected the actress to the film at one point, but del Toro said the collaboration didn't pan out due to conflicting schedules.

This isn't the first time del Toro has talked Pacific Rim 2. He spoke with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year and said "a lot of the cast from the first movie is coming back" for the sequel.

However, it seems like the two leads from Pacific Rim may be missing-in-action in the sequel. Charlie Hunnam told Yahoo! at San Diego Comic Con that he will not return as Raleigh Becket in the next movie because of a scheduling conflict.

"I'm very excited about it! I'm glad they're making it," he said. "I think it's going to be great. I read an early draft of what they're doing. There was one incarnation of this sequel that involved me heavily, but I was unavailable."

Actress Rinko Kikuchi also hasn't announced whether she'll reprise her role as Mako Mori as of yet.

Pacific Rim 2 has announced a slew of casting decisions over the past months though. Star Wars' John Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost in the film, and Cailee Spaeny signed on as an unknown female lead. Levi Meaden and Jing Tian have also joined the cast.

del Toro has spoken about the recent castings and praised the addition of Boyega to the franchise.

"I admire him tremendously. The idea for me is that this is a continuation of the great leadership character that was Idris Elba," he said. "It's a very different character but I love the idea of having a main character who is not a white Anglo-Saxon guy. Before the heated conversation about diversity in film started we were doing Pacific Rim. And I think that universe is a huge proponent of that."

Pacific Rim 2 will hit theaters on February 23, 2018.
