Happy birthday, Jada Pinkett-Smith! The actress turns 45 today.

Born September 1971, Jada was raised by her mother Adrienne in Baltimore, Maryland. Her mother brought up Jada with her own mother, Marion. Having noticed Jada's interest in acting, her grandmother enrolled the budding starlet in piano, tap dance, and ballet lessons. she attended North Carolina School of the Arts before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her career professionally.

Jada started her career in 1990 when she starred in an episode of True Colors. She went on to star in projects like The Nutty Professor, Set It Off, and Scream 2.

However, fans know Jada best for her work in The Matrix films. She played a human rebel named Niobe in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The character was created specifically with Jada in mind.

After The Matrix, Jada starred in projects like The Women, The Human Contract, and Hawthorne. Most recently, fans saw Jada on the small screen in Fox's Gotham as Fish Mooney. The actress reprised her role as the notorious gangster for a second season.

Outside of her acting career, Jada has also pursued her interest in music. Using a stage name, Jada formed a metal band called Wicked Wisdom in 2002 where she performed lead vocals. The band's first album was released in 2006 and even performed at festivals such as Ozzfest.

The actress has been married to Will Smith since 1997. The two met on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as Jada was auditioning for a role. Known for their privacy, the couple keep quiet about their personal lives. They have two children, Jaden and Willow Smith.
