Hugo Weaving Not Interested In Returning As Red Skull

A return of the Red Skull doesn't sound very appealing to actor Hugo Weaving, who recently said that he has no interest in reprising the character for Captain America: Civil War.

As ComicBookMovie reported this weekend, Weaving made it clear that he's done portraying Captain America's Nazi arch-nemesis.

"I have not really changed my opinion about not wanting to do another Captain America," Weaving explained. "It was fun to do. It was a very great thing to do in many ways, but I suppose my focus is more likely to be elsewhere, but who knows."

Weaving did provide the backdoor clause that it's "Always good to keep your your options open and your mind open," and that "certain circumstances do change," but it sounds like the actor is standing firm on his position for now. Of course, this isn't a new tune for Weaving. He previously mentioned in 2012 that he didn't want to return for a Captain America. The only elephant in the room, however, is that Weaving is contractually obliged to give Marvel Studios another Red Skull performance.

But based on what we know about Captain America: Civil War, we doubt that Marvel would push the actor too hard on donning the red mask. Civil War is already pitting Captain America against Iron Man and the United States Government, providing the Star Spangled Avenger with plenty of conflict. Plus, Crossbones actor Frank Grillo has strongly hinted that he'd return for another Captain America outing. So between Iron Man and another severely disfigured foe, it seems—for now-like there isn't much room for the Red Skull. In fact, Weaving said that he hasn't heard from Marvel Studios so far. With a 2015 production on Civil War looming, there isn't much more time left to get Weaving on board.
