By now, everyone knows that once upon a time, Russell Crowe (who plays Jor-El, Superman's biological father, in Man of Steel) while working on a film called Proof Of Life met a young Henry Cavill, who would go on to play Superman. But did you know what Superman's adoptive father--Kevin Costner, who plays Jonathan Kent--starred in a film with a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast? Probably not--because he's easy to miss. Costner played Alex in The Big Chill, opposite Glenn Close as Sarah Cooper. Most people don't remember it because Costner's face was never shown on-camera. Alex's suicide is the catalyst for the film, bringing a group of long-separated friends back together for the first time in years to mourn his loss--and while Costner shot some films that would have shown him interacting with the group, the only images of Costner that ended up in the final cut of the movie were during his funeral preparations, when the mortician dressed the body and combed his hair. Nothing between Costner's shoulders and eyebrows was ever shown. The film was written and directed by The Empire Strikes Back's Lawrence Kasdan, who's back at work with Lucasfilm/Disney working on the next generation of Star Wars films. Below, you can see a video of Kasdan talking about the character of Alex in the Big Chill. At 1:02, he begins talking about the unused footage, and then transitions into talking a bit about Costner about a minute later. Man of Steel is in theaters Friday.
