Masters of the Universe

Sony Picture and Escape Artists Studios are still trying to get their Masters of the Universe movie together and the latest news is that they have a short list for potential directors. According to The Wrap, that list includes Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid), Mike Cahill (Another Earth), and Chris McKay (editor and animation supervisor for The LEGO Movie). Variety's Justin Kroll also named Cahill as being on the film's shortlist, but further added Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) to the mix. Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) was previously attached to direct the film. Sources say that these are the frontrunners, but the studios are looking at several other possible fits and that no contracts have been drawn up as of yet. Zwart has a history working with Sony which may make him an easy fit. McKay has a lot going for him at this time, with the success of the The LEGO Movie, even though he lacks directing experience. McKay seems like a dark horse, given that he is mostly known for low budget dramas with just a touch of science fiction, but would certainly make an interesting choice. Wadlow is currently writing the script for X-Force and is also rumored to be in consideration for the director's chair. Masters of the Universe is a film adaptation of the 1980s sword-and-sorcery animated series. The series was already adapted once, in 1987's Master of the Universe, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man.
