Matt Lucas Returning To Doctor Who In Season 10

DOCTOR WHO MATT LUCAS

Last Christmas, Doctor Who fans fell for with the series' eleventh Christmas special as the episode marked the return of Alex Kingston's River Song. While fans were excited to see River interact with Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor for the first time, they surprisingly left the episode in love with an unexpected character. Playing a character named Nardole, actor Matt Lucas stole hearts as a bumbling yet lovable friend of the Doctor's.

And, today, the BBC announced that Matt Lucas will be reprising his role as Nardole in the opening episode of Doctor Who's next season which begins filming in Cardiff next week.

Matt Lucas commented on the news, saying, "I'm chuffed to bits that Nardole is returning to the TARDIS for some more adventures. I loved acting with Peter and I'm excited to work with Pearl."

The opening episode for the new season will be written by Doctor Who show runner Steven Moffat who has said he's, "delighted and slightly amazed to be welcoming Matt Lucas back on to the TARDIS - and this time it's not just for Christmas, he's sticking around. One of the greatest comedy talents on planet Earth is being unleashed on all of time and space."

Along with Matt Lucas, of course, actress Pearl Mackie will also start filming for the show as she stands to inherit Jenna Coleman's role as the Doctor's companion. While little is known about Pearl's character, the show has revealed that her new character's name is Bill.

Though the Twelfth Doctor is still traveling with Clara Oswald across space and time, she will be replaced with Pearl Mackie as Jenna will be leaving the show. With news about Jenna's exit being released last Fall, fans were curious as to who would be chosen to travel with the Doctor next. Doctor Who started casting for the next companion and came to choose Pearl out of a diverse group of about 70 actors.

As of June 14th, both Peter Capaldi and Pearl Mackie have started script read-throughs with one another. Matt Lucas has also joined the couple as the show preps for production, and fans now can only wait until Doctor Who returns later this year to see the trio in action.
