Mega Man Movie Reportedly In The Works At 20th Century Fox

20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment have put a film based on the classic Capcom videogame character Mega Man into development, according to a report from The Tracking Board.

David Ready and Michael Finfer are overseeing the project, with Peter Chernin producing. This is the same team that has been overseeing Fox's rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise. Mike Ireland and Ryan Horrigan will produce for Fox.

Mega Man (Rock Man in Japan) first appeared in 1987 in the original Mega Man for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was popular enough to spawn 9 sequels and multiple spinoff series. The premise generally has Mega Man, the good natured robot created by Dr. Light, battling other robots who have been reprogrammed by the treacherous Dr. Wily for evil purposes.

Mega Man is receiving a bit of a resurgence in popularity as of late. He was added to the roster of Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS, a legacy collection of the six NES games in the series was just released on current generation consoles, and an animated series is being developed by Man of Action.

If true, the film will also become part of a new wave of videogame movies that includes Legendary Pictures' Warcraft, Michael Fassbender's Assassin's Creed, and the recently announced Borderlands.
