, in its fourth week of release, made almost 1/3 more money than last week's #2 film, Battleship, but still came in second behind a solid Memorial Day weekend debut by Men in Black 3, according to Box Office Mojo.
The Avengers brought in $36,987,000, being the second-highest fourth-week total of all time (behind Avatar, the current record-holder for the highest-grossing film of all time, which made $50 million the same period) and made the movie the fastest to make $500 million. Men in Black 3 made $55 million, which puts it about on pace to meet its $75 million four-day goal.
The draw is almost exactly what Men in Black II made a decade ago ($54.9 million), and the third-highest two-day opening of any Will Smith film, according to Box Office Mojo. The Avengers, meanwhile, will likely have to wait another few days to make the $20 million necessary to overcome The Dark Knight as the highest-grossing superhero film of all time at the domestic box office.
Worldwide, Men in Black 3 made nearly $200 million, roughly in line with expectations.
