After Sam Mendes’ SPECTRE is released next month, Bond producers will have to begin yet another arduous search for someone to direct the next James Bond adventure. Though, their search may have been made easier now that Denis Villeneuve has expressed interest in the franchise.

“It’s strange, because I understand that each genre has its own specific rules, but for me, they are all movies,” Villeneuve told CS when they mentioned he’s been leaning more towards genre than drama of late. “I’m just attracted to try to do different things, and I was very excited to make a movie that required more action. I was raised with James Bond. I love James Bond movies. I would love to do a James Bond movie one day. Action is very cinematic. I’m not someone that loves dialogue โ I am someone that loves movement. Action, if it’s well done, can be very poetic and meaningful.”
Villeneuve made those comments while promoting his Mexican drug cartel actioner Sicario, which is getting rave reviews by critics and audiences alike. It currently has a 92% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and some people believe it could be in the Oscar hunt for Best Picture. Villeneuve also directed the taut-thriller Prisoners with Hugh Jackman and is preparing to helm the upcoming Blade Runner sequel.
In Mexico, SICARIO means hitman. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent [Emily Blunt] is enlisted by an elite government task force official [Josh Brolin] to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past [Benicio Del Toro], the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.
