The third installment in the J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek reboot will begin filming in the next six months, according to franchise star Zachary Quinto.

"I think it's on the horizon," Quinto said during an appearance on The Today Show. "Things are rumbling, so I have a feeling that we will be in production sometime in the next six months."

Roberto Orci, who co-wrote all three of the Abrams-produced films, will step in to direct in the third installment, replacing Abrams himself who is busy making Star Wars Episode VII. Orci co-wrote the movie with Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne.

THR notes that last month, Orci confirmed that work on the screenplay was complete and that the characters were more like their Original Series counterparts than fans had seen since the reboot.

Star Trek debuted on TV in September 1966, and the goal for the third film has always been to get it in theaters in time for the 50th anniversary.
