A new poster for SyFy's upcoming television series Dominion has been released online (via EW). The poster combines modern aesthetic with classical art, using the iconic depiction of the archangel Michael standing ready to vanquish Satan with his sword, but in the place of Satan is a human being dual-wielding guns. "I got the idea for the Dominion posters from thinking about how the show brings together something classical – angels – with something contemporary – Vegas," says James Spence, senior vice president of creative at Syfy. "Much like Banksy when he subverted classical paintings. I thought it would be really compelling to subvert a classic image of an angel with a contemporary image of a gunfight (of which there are many in the show!). We worked with photographer Peter Lippmann to build up our image. Peter is a master of shooting images that look like they've been painted. The result is an image that at first glance appears like a renaissance image – the light, color and form of the image adheres to all the classic tropes – but on second glance it's anything but." Dominion is an epic supernatural drama set in the near future. Specifically, 25 years after "The Extinction War," when an army of lower angels, assembled by the archangel Gabriel, waged war against mankind. The archangel Michael, turning against his own kind, chose to side with humanity. Rising out of the ashes of this long battle are newly fortified cities which protect human survivors. At the center of the series is the city of Vega, a glistening empire that has formed from the ruins of what was once Las Vegas. The Dominion series premiere will air on SyFy on June 19.
