Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada has praised Bernthal’s performance in the past. The first look image shows a recreation of a scene from Garth Ennis’ The Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank limited series.

In the scene, The Punisher knocks Daredevil out and chains him to a post. The Punisher puts a gun in Daredevil’s hand and tells Daredevil that he has to make a choice. The Punisher is going to kill a criminal unless Daredevil uses the gun to shoot him first. Daredevil either has to break his code against killing or watch The Punisher kill a man.

“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people โ€” the way we force Matt โ€” to second-guess themselves,” showrunner Doug Petrie tells EW. “Taking lethal justice into your own hands is in America in 2015 is tricky sโ€”t. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”

Ultimately, Daredevil pulls the trigger to try to stop The Punisher. However, the gun has no firing pin. The Punisher winds up shooting the criminal, and Daredevil has to live with the fact that he was willing to kill to stop The Punisher.

Addtionally, there was a second image released, featuring Matt Murdock and Karen Page enjoying a game of pool, and apparently growing into a more romantic relationship.

Daredevil Season 2 comes to Netflix in 2016
