The SpongeBob Movie Wins Weekend With $56 Million Box Office

Paramount has reason to celebrate as The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water will finish up the weekend with $56 million, according to Deadline. That's a 75% better opening the 2004 SpongeBob movie. That's the fifth best February opening weekend and second best February opening for an animated film. Last year's The Lego Movie has the record with $69.1 million.

Meanwhile, American Sniper continue to perform well. It only experienced a 21% drop this weekend to finish in second place with $24.1 million. It is only $18 million short of a $300 million domestic total.

Things aren't so good for Jupiter Ascending, which supposedly cost Warner Bros. over $200 million to make. It will finish in third with a modest $19 million weekend, which is $1 million below the studios expectations. Things are even worse for Seventh Son, which will finish in fourth place with a paltry $7.1 million.
