Transformers: 5 Facts to Know About Unicron

Transformers: The Last Knight just launched a big trailer that showcases everything you’d expect from a Michael Bay movie (big explosions, fast action, flashy eye candy) – with a little bit of Transformers lore along with it.

One of the biggest potential reveals The Last Knight could have in store is the live-action adaptation of Unicron, one of the biggest bads in the Transformers universe (literally). Admittedly, Unicron has been rumored for about the last two or three Transformers movies, but since The Last Knight has the most compelling evidence of his inclusion, there’s some Unicron Facts You Need to Know before checking out the film.

He Is 1 of 2 Transformers Gods

Unicron is the evil twin brother of Primus, who is the creator god of the Transformers. While Primus is a force for benevolence and good in the multiverse, Unicron’s only function is to bring chaos and destruction, with the goal of being the only god in a lifeless universe.ย

Unicron was created by The One, to explore the universe as it began. The One then divided Unicron in two, creating Primus as his twin. The war between Primus and Unicron has gone on since the beginning of the Universe, and could be the bigger story arc thatย Transformers: The Last Knightย filmmakers have hinted at.ย

He’s The Evil Cybertron

As the war between Unicron and Primus went on, Primus realized that he was noย match for his brother in combat. In an act of sacrifice, Primus lured Unicron from the Astral plane to the physical one, trapping them both within metallic planetoids.ย

Primus went on to become the planet Cybertron, and grew new life in the form of Transformers; Unicron eventually learned to transform his planet form into a giant robot form using the energy from consumed planets, and went on to become the scourge of the multiverse.ย

He’s the Devil

Unicron is often compared to a “Faustian Devil” of the Transfomers Universe; he’s the embodiment of evilย and often operatesย through temptation and corruption of others, rather than direct action.ย

Like Marvel Comics villains Galactus or Apocalypse, Unicron likes to have disciples or “horsemen” serving as his harbingers and henchmen. The most famous of these is Galvatron, the resurrected form of Megatron. Sinceย Transformers: Age of Extinctionย kind of already blew the whole Galvatron storyline, Unicron’s Four Horsemen would be more likely forย The Last Knight.ย

Is Unicron responsible for the resurrection of a rusted Optimus Prime into the evil purple-eyed guy we see inย The Last Knight?ย Maybe.ย

He’s a Threat to Everyone

Primus is the creator of all Transformers, Autobots and Decepticons, and loves them as his children; as a consumer of worlds, Unicron doesn’t ally himself with anyone – certainly not the Decepticons.ย

Autobots, Decepticons, and humans have all united in order to stop the threat of Unicron across the multiverse; if Unicron is the threat we’re going to see inย The Last Knight, both factions of Transformers may have to work together (along with old and new human protagonists) to save the universe.ย

He’s Been in the Movies Before

Unicron has been in aย Transformersย movie before: he was the big villain of the 1986ย Transformers: The Movieย animated feature.ย

That version of Unicron is the one mainstream fans are most familiar with, voiced by acting icon, Orson Welles. Welles famously said he hated doing the movie, and only did so for the money (as didย Star Trek’sย Leonard Nimoy, who voiced Galvatron). However, Welles’ย baritone tones also made Unicron a classic evil villain.ย Ifย The Last Knightย brings Unicron into live-action, the vocal performanceย betterย be on point.ย
