In Death Note, Dafoe will play Ryuk the Shinigami. He is joined by Nat Wolff, Margaret Qualley, Keith Stansfield, Paul Nakauchi, and Shea Whigham. Based on the Japanese manga, Death Note follows Wolff’s high school student character who comes across a supernatural notebook, giving him the ability to kill anyone by writing their name and picturing their face.

Death Note is being produced by Roy Lee of The Ring and Dan Lin of Sherlock Holmes, along with Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka.

Dafoe’s long list of credits speaks for itself, but in case you need a refresher, the actor has quite a resume. In the geek community, his Justice League and Aquaman portrayal of the Atlantean Vulko is far from his first dabble in comic book films. He was Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin in the original Spider-Man trilogy and is also known for his roles in Finding Nemo, Platoon, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. He is a two-time Oscar winner.

Death Note will debut on Netflix in 2017.
