WonderCon: Pacific Rim Graphic Novel Cover Revealed

Earlier today, Legendary Comics and Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro gave WonderCon attendees a surprise treat in the form of cover art for the upcoming Pacific Rim prequel graphic novel, Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero. The fully-painted cover was created by Alex Ross. Written by Pacific Rim screenwriter himself, Travis Beacham, and with del Toro's hands-on supervision, the volume was announced this year at New York Comic-Con. It's beautifully by Sean Chen, Yvel Guichet, and Pericles Junior with inks by Steve Bird and Mark McKenna.

Hitting stores June 5, Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero chronicles the very first time Earth is menaced by incredible monsters known as Kaiju. These inhuman beasts rise from the ocean depths and threaten to extinquish all mankind, who race to develop massive robot fighting machines called Jaegers to fight them. Each Jaeger is controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. This action-packed book features many of the key characters from the film as readers follow them in their early careers. "The idea was, from the start, not to do an adaptation of the movie, that, with very rare exceptions, suck," del Toro told ComicBook.com at New York Comic Con. "I always thought it was a lose-lose proposition to try and adapt the movie into comic book form. We thought about this as the most humble trans-media attempt. When we were developing the movie, both Travis and I kept writing biographies for the characters and eventually, we started developing the design and the tech for the Jeagers and the story for the Kaiju and we ended up generating a bible that was several hundred pages long. There was such richness in that material, so many ideas that were there."
